Residential Natural Gas Prices in Georgia

  • Here’s your one stop shop to compare natural gas offers and switch your provider in the Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) area of Georgia.

In this article you’ll see current natural gas prices in Georgia, tips on how to compare GA gas rates and why you should shop your marketer each time your contract expires. (Note: And if you live in Atlanta, we have additional information on shopping your natural gas rate.)

If Atlanta Gas Light is your gas utility company, you must pick a marketer to provide your gas supply. AGL can not supply your gas, even though they manage delivery to your home.

The Georgia Public Service Commission has a website to help you shop. But the Gas Marketers Pricing Comparison is a PDF file that you have to download. It’s hard to read all the fine print and notes on that chart.

That’s why we’ve created this easy natural gas rate table for your review. This includes rates from all the major gas suppliers, including those who don’t participate in this web site! We do this as a service to our readers. And it doesn’t hurt to show that the companies we work with tend to have the best prices.

Understanding Natural Gas Prices in GA

Here’s what to look for when you compare natural gas rates.

Natural Gas Price per Therm: This is the price per unit of natural gas. Therms are a unit of measurement of natural gas.

Customer Service Charge (CSC): Most natural gas suppliers charge a monthly service charge. This covers costs of billing, customer service and overhead. The CSC ranges from $4.95 to $9.95 per month.

Cancellation Fee: If you choose a fixed rate contract, your gas supplier will purchase natural gas for you for a set term. If you switch away before the end of your contract, you’ll be charged a cancellation fee.

Type of Plan: Consumers can pick from a fixed rate, with a set price per unit of gas for a period of time, or a variable rate, where the price changes monthly. Unless you want to monitor rates every month we recommend avoiding variable rates.

In this screen shot, you’ll see how rates are displayed on NaturalGasPlans.com.

You’ll see the price per therm, monthly customer service charge and cancellation fee for each plan. You’ll also clearly see if it’s a fixed rate or variable plan and the contact term.

when comparing natural gas rates in georgia look at the price per therm, cancellation fee and monthly fee.

Regardless of who you pick to supply your natural gas, you’ll pay AGL to deliver it. These delivery and distribution charges may show as multiple line items on your bill. We detail all the AGL Pass-Through Charges in another article.

Comparing & Deciding Which Offer is Best

A price comparison search can help you find the cheapest natural gas offer among energy companies.

But please don’t just pick the cheapest rate. Take a look at the Plan Details & Pricing section, available on each plan.

For example, if you use 50 therms per month like the average consumer, that 29¢ variable rate with a $9.95 fee ends up only slightly cheaper than the 48¢ rate with a lower customer service charge. (And what will you pay after that first month?)

If your usage is low, pay attention to the monthly customer service charge. If your usage is high, focus on getting the best price per therm.

And you can compare the monthly bill estimate for up to 3 plans at a time, with the Compare Plans Tool. Just check the box for the plans you’re interested in and click Compare Plans.

    Timing Your Switch in AGL

You’ve found the offer you want to sign up for. Now to get the timing right. The timing for your switch is controlled by the Georgia Public Service Commission.

If you sign up with a marketer (supplier) by the 19th of the month, your switch will become effective on the first day of the following month. For example, sign up by 11:59pm on the 19th of May and your new gas supply contract starts June 1.

If you sign up after the 19th of the month, it will take another full month to process your switch, i.e. July 1 instead of June 1, using the example above.

You’ll want to check your contract expiration date for your current supplier to avoid any possible early termination fee.
